SUCCESS STORY: A patient of ours has been suffering from shingles for several weeks. He had used several different prescription medications without any luck. John, pharmacist at MedSave, suggested to his doctor that we could try our compounded shingles cream. The patient used the cream & had significant results. The patient was very thankful for the services we provide.

I will explain and if you have additional questions please feel free to contact a pharmacist at MedSave and they will be able to further explain.

Compounding is the making of customized/personalized products to meet your specific needs. Those needs might include making a product that is not commercially available, making a particular dosage form, flavoring, or micro/macro doses of a particular product

Its practice dates back to the origins of pharmacy; yet, compounding’s presence in the pharmacy profession has changed over the years. In the 1930s and 1940s, approximately 60% of all medications were compounded. With the advent of drug manufacturing in the 1950s and ’60s, compounding rapidly declined. The pharmacist’s role as a preparer of medications quickly changed to that of a dispenser of manufactured dosage forms.

Within the last two decades, compounding has experienced a resurgence as modern technology and innovative techniques and research have allowed more pharmacists to customize medications to meet specific patient needs.

There are several reasons why pharmacists compound prescription medications. The most important one is “patient non-compliance” Many patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes, or are sensitive to standard drug strengths. With a physician’s consent, a compounding pharmacist can change the strength of a medication, alter its form to make it easier for the patient to ingest, or add flavor to make it taste better.

Compounding applications can include: Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, Veterinary, Hospice, Pediatric, Ophthalmic, Dental, Otic (for the ear), Chronic Pain Management, Neuropathies, Infertility, Sports Medicine, Dermatology, Medication Flavoring, Podiatry and Gastroenterology.

I hope this post was informative and helped you understand the benefits of compounding!
