Several years ago, MedSave decided to expand its specialties and add a compounding lab to the pharmacy. Compounding medications can be beneficial to our customers because it provides a way to customize medications to fit our patient’s needs. Its practice dates back to the origins of pharmacy; yet, compounding’s presence throughout the pharmacy profession has changed over the years. In the 1930’s and 1940’s, approximately 60 percent of all medications were compounded. With the advent of drug manufacturing in the 1950’s and 1960’s, compounding rapidly declined. The pharmacists’ role as a preparer of medications quickly changed to that of a dispenser of manufactured dosage forms.
Today, compounded medications are on the rise as manufactured medications don’t always work for everyone’s needs. At MedSave we compound medications daily and work closely with physicians and their patients to ensure the best solution for our patients.
What kinds of prescriptions can be compounded?
Almost any kind of medication can be compounded. Compounded prescriptions are ideal for any patient requiring unique dosages and/or delivery methods. These methods can take the form of solutions, suppositories, sprays, lotions, oral rinses, lollipops, and even as transdermal sticks. Other compounding applications can include pediatric, dental, dermatology, sports medicine and wound therapy.
