Why Diabetic Shoes?
The purpose of the diabetic shoe is to provide the most accommodative and proper fit to avoid “shearing” or movement of the foot inside the shoe. Correct fitting of diabetic shoes and inserts does this by achieving total contact with the bottom of the foot. Diabetic shoes are deeper to allow proper fit of the insert within the shoe. If the insert is put into a regular shoe, it will be too tight, causing pressure and shearing on top of the foot and other complications.
Do you Qualify?
In 1993 Congress passed the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Bill which allows qualified persons with diabetes to receive protective footwear and customized inserts.
Medicare (Part B) will cover 80% of the cost of one pair of extra depth shoes with three pairs of heat moldable inserts or three pairs of custom fabricated inserts per calendar year. You may qualify for Medicare assistance through the therapeutic shoe bill if you can answer yes to any of these foot problems:
- Previous amputation of the foot or part of the foot
- History of previous foot ulceration
- Pre-ulcerative callous formation or peripheral neuropothy with a history of callous formation
- Foot deformity
- Poor circulation
If you answered yes to any of the foot problems listed above, stop by MedSave Family Pharmacy and we can get you a form to bring to your doctor.
